I have been playing around with DIY and the idea of DIY-DYE for some time now – I am such a Fiddler!
I have also been doing the tango with tardiness hence the delay in show-&-tell…sigh! But in true fashionably-late style, here it is! Enjoy and be my guest in getting your dye-pot a-simmering!
I had a grey, 100% cotton scarf that I loved, but that was a bit…..well, grey!! I couldn’t bring myself to toss it as it was relatively new, and secondly, I do adore a scarf with a twist!
So I got the cranium-cogs a-churning and hot-footed it to Spotlight for a packet of dye! After perusing the endless choice, I decided on iDye as it has the option of either stove-top or machine dyeing. Also, the colours and information were both clearly displayed. They’re not, however, inexpensive at $12.95 a pop. I had no real dye experience before this, but I did have an inkling that dye was supposed to be a lot cheaper! Am I right? Or am I harking back to my teenage years of a blue-moon or two ago?!
Either way, it was worth the spend; The process is no-fuss and mess-free, and my yield was triple-fold.
Tip: If you have a few garments looking to be of the same hue, throw them all in to get your 3-for-the-price-of-one value!
As you can see, I got busy pulling anything white and vulnerable for an evening of experiments! A white dress and sarong were both destined for charity, until this pot of dye made an appearance! So glad I retrieved them as they are now once more, exciting closet-cloth!!
Voilà! Dye job done! Spaghetti-fringed scarf in all of its new-colour glory.
Top Left: The white sarong I mentioned earlier. Top Right: The white dress.
The dress in full play! I decided to dip-dye the dress. At first the top was white, but when it went into the machine as the instructions required post-dye, it created a rather lovely lemon-licked look.
Taking pride-of-COLOUR-place on the clothes line! Colour chommies! [Afrikaans slang meaning: mates/friends] My love of Alliteration crosses all language borders!!
Scarf: Styled! See more here!
Sarong: Styled!
I have gone back to my base and much-loved palette of black and black and black…hahhah…with a healthy kick of white. BUT I have always had a penchant for twist-&-quirk, and so it remains in the form of colour and its subsequent hits of POP here and there! Enough to be seen in the dark or…on the dark fields of fashion!
I am yet to style the dress, but I am looking forward to it, especially in translating its summer airiness into a winter ensemble. I am intent on form and function aka as fashion loveliness and warmth! There was far too much freezing going on in this body last Winter due to inappropriate-dress!
Happy dyeing!! It’s a simple yet superb way of re-jigging your old shizz! It is also the best way to get your creative crank ON. It’s a high much like the shopping one only better – for the bank balance, and not to mention on the warm-&-tingly front!
Have you attempted any DIY-dye jobs lately? Or ever? Want to share? Any tips from your experience dyeing other fabrics such as Wool or Silk? Would love to see your creations and hear your inside info!
