assuage:

verb (used with object) meaning:

To satisfy;  to relieve, to ease, to soothe.

For example:

To assuage one’s hunger

Used in a sentence:

There is no one formula to assuage grief – everyone finds his or her own way of feeling some relief or comfort.

Despite her healthy intentions, only a big fat greasy burger would assuage her hunger today!

Similar:

alleviate;  lessen

The opposite:

heighten;  intensify
